Storm King
September 4, 2023
It was a bright sun, in the 90s, and very humid. I rented a bike (not the smartest move but certainly better than walking) and rode through some of the 500 acres that comprise what is probably the largest collection of contemporary outdoor sculpture in the U.S. In need of a break, I spent some time with Three Legged Buddha, by Zhang Huan. The pieces of this sculpture were as fascinating as the whole and every angle offered new discoveries. It is just one of hundreds of pieces at the Center, many of vast scale. I am still thinking about my experience. The power of sculpture is often its context and while some of the art work here is site-specific (Andy Goldsworthy, Maya Lin), others are not. It's a lot to take in at one time but I guess that can be said for most larger collections and museums...not recommended to do it all in a day! - Susan Silberberg, 348 miles
